Team Name: Crop Cultivation and Physiology
Research Focus: taking sustainable high yield as the goal, focusing on such prominent problems in crop production as the large gap between theoretical and actual yield, low reproducibility of ultra-high yield and difficulties in significant increase in per unit yield, laying emphasis on the generic theories and key technologies contributing to the unit yield potential breakthrough of maize, wheat, soybean, rice and other major crops, including the causes of poor crop yields and potentials, physiological mechanism and regulatory technique of high-yielding population construction and efficient source-sink performance, crop resource efficient utilization mechanism and technological innovation, and the establishment of high-yielding cultivation technology specifications for maize, wheat and other crops in different ecological zones.
Research Objectives: to make breakthroughs in the quantification of super high yielding crop performance and technical approach, super high yielding crop features and construction techniques, crop fertilizer water efficient use mechanism, efficient production technology simplification and integration, physical product research and development, regional high-yielding case construction and technology integration demonstration, etc., thus leading to large-scale, sustainable and steady increase in yield.
Team Chief Scientist: Dr. LI Shao-kun
Dr. Li Shaokun graduated from original Shihezi Agricultural College (now a school of Shehezi University) in 1984, got a master’s degree in agronomy at Northwestern Agricultural University in 1990 and a doctorate in agronomy at China Agricultural University in 1996. He worked at the Institute of Crop Sciences after leaving the Agronomy Postdoctoral Station at Shandong Agricultural University in 1998 and was promoted professor in June 1997. He has been engaged in teaching and research on crop cultivation theory and technology since his graduation in 1984, serves as the chief maize expert in national agricultural science and technology households demonstration project and national maize industrial technology system cultivation specialist, and has made outstanding achievements in maize high yield physiological ecology and cultivation as well as in maize technology promotion. Since 2005, Li has won 2 National Science and Technology Progress Awards (a first and a third prize), 1 national teaching award (first prize) and 8 provincial and ministerial achievement awards (5 first prizes), obtained 34 registered national software copyrights, published 17 monographs and 157 papers including 28 SCI papers and 15 EI papers, and supervised 3 postdoctoral students, 19 doctoral students and 48 postgraduates. He was on the lists of the first National Agricultural Research Outstanding Talents (in 2011), Corps Science and Technology Cooperation Awards for Outstanding Contributions (in 2012), National Outstanding Food Production Researchers (in 2012) and National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Researchers (in 2012), and was granted special allowances of the State Council (in 2012).
