Date:2014-07-31Author:AdminSource:ICS

Team Name: Innovation and Utilization of Crop Germplasm Resources

Research Subjects:  Study on Innovation and Efficient Utilization of Elite Crop Germplasm Resources

Research Focus: Exploring innovative technologies for efficient creation of germplasms based on successful directional transfers of exogenous genomic segments/gene clusters/genes by distant hybridization, and developing efficient technologies for the utilization of elite germplasms based on molecular marker development and whole-genome selection; Transferring genomic contents of wild species into cultivated species of rice, wheat and other crops, and creating intermediate materials for breeding, which include various alien additional lines and translocation lines derived from wild species and cultivated species; Investigating the effects of exogenous genomic segments containing important target genes on the genetics and breeding of crops, and screening exogenous chromosome recombinant segments/gene clusters/genes with corresponding molecular markers that can be used in breeding new elite crop varieties with breakthroughs in agronomic traits

Research Objectives: Aiming at crucial scientific themes related to broadening the genetic basis of breeding and efficient creation of novel elite varieties, to create easy-to-use new germplasm that are adaptable to various ecological zones, and display superior target agronomic traits. The research will reveal the effects of important exogenous genomic segments on genetics and breeding, and provide new material and technical support for cultivation of new groundbreaking crop varieties.

Team Chief Scientist: Dr. LI Li-hui

Dr. Li Lihui, research fellow and doctoral supervisor, has been engaged in crop germplasm research since 1985 and went to the FRRL, ARS-USDA as a visiting scholar in 1992-1993.

Li is mainly engaged in theoretical and applied research on exogenous wheat gene transfer, genetic diversity analysis and genetic testing of unique and superior wheat germplasm, as well as the phylogeny of perennial Triticeae plants. He is currently the chief scientist of the national 973 Program “Basic Research on Genetic Components and Utilization of Backbone Parents of Major Food Crops”, the chief scientist of CAAS Innovation Team “Research on Conservation and Innovation of Crop Germplasm Resources”, CAAS outstanding talent, national candidate for “New Century Talents Project”, young scientific expert of outstanding contributions appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture, member of National Expert Committee on Protection of Biological Species Resources, member of New Plant Varieties Review Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture, and member of the Seventh CAAS Academic Committee. He was granted special allowances of the State Council in 1996, won the “Eighth China Youth Science and Technology Award” by the Central Organization Department and the Ministry of Personnel of PRC in 2004, and was awarded for his outstanding contributions to the “Eleventh Five-Year” national science and technology programs in 2010.

Li has won a second prize and a third prize of national scientific and technological progress award, and a second prize of the Ministry of Agriculture scientific and technological progress award. He published more than 100 papers on domestic and foreign core journals, and his doctorial dissertation was included in National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations by the Ministry of Education and the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council.
