National Crop Germplasm Preservation Center

Crop germplasm are important material basis for original innovation, crop breeding and biotechnology industry in agricultural science. National Crop Germplasm Preservation Center (The National Mid-term Genebank for Food Crops) was built in 2002. It covers a total construction area of 5,500 square meters. It is comprised of 18 storage rooms, with the storage temperature at -18°C or -4°C, the relative humidity under 50%. The overall storage capacity is 600,000 accessions. Currently, this center holds more than 220,000 seed accessions covering 32 crops.

Missions:

1. To collect, identificate, evaluate, mid-term preserve and regenerate the food crop germplasm throughout China, including rice, wheat, corn, soybean, food legumes, millet, sorghum, buckwheat, etc.

2. To build and improve the platform for sharing information and crop germlasm preserved at this center. The crop germpalsm can be distributed for breeding, research or education.
