ICS-CAAS Organizes the 2026 Lancang–Mekong Green Rice Technology Training and Variety Demonstration Event

On May 18, the Institute of Crop Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ICS-CAAS), held the 2026 China–Vietnam Crop Technology Training and Variety Demonstration Event at the China–Vietnam Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Base in Bac Ninh Province, Vietnam. The event aimed to deepen agricultural science and technology exchanges between China and Vietnam and advance implementation of the Lancang–Mekong Cooperation Special Fund project “Breeding of High-Quality Green Rice Varieties and Integrated Demonstration of Production Technologies in China, Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos.” Officials and experts attending included Nguyen Hong Quang, Deputy Director of the Bac Ninh Department of Agriculture and Environment; Pham Bao Duong, Rector of Bac Giang Agriculture and Forestry University; Zhou Xing, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Office of the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences; Chen Kai, Senior Agronomist at the Gene Research Institute; Nguyen Van Hoat, General Manager of Bac Giang Seed Company; and Wu Quanqing, General Manager of Guangxi Wanchuan Seed Industry. The event was chaired by Prof. Xu Jianlong of ICS-CAAS.

Participants visited field demonstrations of 43 rice varieties, two fresh-consumption maize varieties, and four fruit and vegetable varieties, with particular attention to the favorable characteristics and field performance of 35 rice varieties from China. They received specialized training and technical guidance from Chinese experts on integrated management of major rice pests and diseases, tailored to local rice-growing conditions, pest and disease occurrence, and production practices. Participants agreed that the event had consolidated the achievements of China–Vietnam cooperation under the Lancang–Mekong framework in exchanging agricultural research results, promoting varieties, and expanding economic and trade cooperation. It had also substantially improved the demonstration and application of high-quality crop varieties and advanced technologies in Vietnam, supporting coordinated development in areas of agricultural strength in both countries.

This was the second joint China–Vietnam technology training and demonstration event supported by the Lancang–Mekong Cooperation Special Fund project. Through these activities, Chinese rice varieties have featured in more than 100 variety demonstrations in Vietnam, providing a platform for promoting technologies associated with China’s green, high-quality super rice in the Lancang–Mekong region. Chinese and Vietnamese companies also held variety promotion activities, business negotiations, and partnership discussions during the event. A signing ceremony for crop seed orders laid the groundwork for deeper cooperation between seed companies in the two countries.

The event was jointly organized by ICS-CAAS and the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, with Guangxi Wanchuan Seed Industry Co., Ltd. of China and Bac Giang Seed Joint Stock Company of Vietnam responsible for local arrangements. More than 60 representatives participated, including officials from agricultural authorities, researchers, business representatives, and large-scale growers from organizations such as the Bac Ninh Department of Agriculture and Environment, Bac Giang Agriculture and Forestry University, and Bac Giang Seed Joint Stock Company.
