Crop Germplasm Resources Preservation and Sharing

Date:2014-07-31Author:AdminSource:ICS

Team Name: Crop Germplasm Resources Preservation and Sharing

Research Focus: Our team is charged with improving current crop germplasm resources preservation and sharing operations, and our main research interests are:

  • Develop methods to preserve species and accessions not currently in the long-term storage, especially cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen for vegetatively propagated germplasm in diverse forms (e.g., shoot tips, dormant buds, pollen);

  • Develop methods, especially non-invasive techniques, to improve the efficiency and accuracy in viability, vigor, genetic integrity and potential longevity evaluating of germplasm preserved in low-temperature seed banks, in vitro banks, cryopreservation banks and field banks;

  • Explore strategies, theories, techniques and methods for crop germplasm resources in situ and on-farm conservation;

  • Develop data standards, databases, application softwares and network information systems for the crop germplasm resources management and research.

Research objectives: Developing strategies and technologies to increase the genetic diversity of germplasm preserved in various facilities, and to improve the effectiveness of crop germplasm genebanks; developing the crop germplasm resource information system to improve the efficiency of germplasm information and accession sharing.

Team Chief Scientist: Dr. LU Xin-xiong

Education Background

Lu Xiniong, an expert in plant genetic resources conservation, received his BSc degree in Plant (1984) from the Xiamen University, and his MS degree in Agronomy (1999) from the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, P.R. China.

Research Area

He is Head of National Genebank of China, the vice-director of the Conservation and Research Center for Crop Genetic Resources, ICSCAAS, and leader of the Innovation Program of Conservation and Sharing of Crop Genetic Resources at ICSCAAS.

He is majoring in the research and conservation of the national crop genetic resources, both seeds and vegetatively propagated materials. During the last decade, he has been in charge of 12 research projects from the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Science and Technology. He has participated in the organization and implementation of the conservation of over 380 thousands seed accessions at the long-term genebank ofChina, and published 3 technical regulations on collection, management and conservation for crop germplasm resources. He is working on the development of the warning indicators and monitoring methods for viability and the genetic integrity of seeds during conservation, and the establishment of the germplasm information system for safety storage, the study of monitoring, warning and regeneration of conserved germplasm, which provide reliable technical support for the safe conservation and regeneration of germplasm in the National Genebank. He also has excellent experience in anti-ageing studies and genebank construction.

Publications

He has edited or participated in the editing of 3 books, and has published more than 50 papers as first or corresponding author.
