Dr. Yunbi Xu, senior scientist and maize molecular breeder, CIMMYT-CAAS Joint International Research Center for Applied Genomics and Molecular Breeding, was selected as a recruited expert for the National Key Laboratory Platform through“Recruitment Program of Global Experts”, a top talent program in China. He is the third person recruited through this program by the Institute of Crop Science, CAAS.

Dr. Xu has been devoting his research to the theories of molecular breeding and their applications to rice and maize. He proposed and developed a series of concepts and methodologies for molecular breeding, including QTL separating, pyramiding and cloning, marker-assisted selection through seed DNA-based genotyping, whole genome strategies for marker-assisted plant breeding, joint linkage-linkage disequilibrium mapping for QTL, and etyping or environmental assaying as a key component for integrated breeding platform in addition to genotyping and phenotyping. Through working with international collaborators, he proposed the development of perennial cereal crops, including rice and maize, for environment protection and sustainable agriculture, developed the first set of maize SNP chip for molecular breeding, and constructed the maize haplotype map, HapMap 2, to cover the whole maize genome.

His research achievements include over 100 publications in academic journals including Science, Nature Genetics and PNAS, with over 5700 Google citations and h index of 31. His book Molecular Plant Breeding (Xu, CABI, 2010), has been selected as importantreferencefor undergraduate and graduate students by worldwide universities, and recommended as encyclopedichandbookon molecular breeding by Dr. Norman Borlaug, Nobel Prize laureate and Dr. Ronald L Phillips, a famous biologist worldwide. Dr. Xu organized several international conferences on molecular breeding, and delivered talks for over 20 international conferences, symposia and workshops.

As a recruited expert for the National Key Laboratory Platform, Dr. Xu will be appointed as a chief scientist for aCAAS Innovative Program team,“Molecular Breeding Technologies and their Applications in Maize Improvement”, while continuing working as a senior scientist and maize molecular breeder at the CIMMYT-CAAS Joint International Research Center (www.ccmaize.org).
