Team Name: Crop Germplasm Resources Collection and Introduction
Research Focus: collecting and evaluating stress-resistant crop germplasm resources in arid areas in Northwest, and investigating, collecting and classifying crop wild relatives and species resources unique to China; building a joint investigation team, going to the major foreign diversity centers on crop germplasm, investigating and collecting upland rice, rice landrace , wheat, maize, food legumes, cotton, barley, oat and other kind of important germplasm resources; studying the evolution, classification, phenotypic traits and availability of elite crop germplasm resources and establishing databases to provide the germplasm resources and their data to breeders and researchers for nationwide.
Research objectives: to increase strategic reserves of germplasm resources in China, enrich species and genetic diversity of inventory germplasm, develop new germplasm and new materials much needed in breeding and scientific research, and promote a modern seed industry and sustainable agricultural development by collecting and utilizing elite crop germplasm resources.
Team Chief: Dr. WANG Shu-min
Education Background
Wang Shumin, a researcher on plant genetic resources by training, received his BSc degree in Agronomy (1984) from the Laiyang Agricultural University of Shandong Province, his MS degree in Plant Genetics (1987) from the Graduate School of CAAS and his PhD in Crop Genetics and Breeding (2001) from the China Agricultural University in Beijing, China.
Research Area
Wang Shumin is a program leader on crop collection mission in China. He organized the collection mission in Three Gorge Areas from 1996~2000 and the stress tolerance crop germplasm resources investigation on West-North Regions of China from 2011~2016. He was also a national coordinator for plant germplasm resources protection and utilization and responsible for the international collaboration in China.
Wang Shumin was also doing the research on gene discovery focus on disease and drought tolerance of common bean as well as evaluation, regeneration, documentation and conservation for food legume germplasm resources.
Wang Shumin was an expert of International treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. He attended more than ten times of the meeting related to the plant genetic resources and negotiation on the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. He was familiar with the rules and procedure related to material transfer agreement.
